Aquebogue is a hamlet in Suffolk County Long Island in the northeastern section of Riverhead. Aquebogue received its name when the Town of Southold purchased the area from the Indians somewhere between 1648 and 1649. Aquebogue is an Indian word that translates to mean head of the bay or end of the water place. The first settlement in Aquebogue was in 1758 as the first church. During this time, the hamlet was divided into Upper and Lower Aquebogue until 1886, when James M. Magee was appointed Postmaster at which time the hamlet became known as Aquebogue.
Aquebogue has one public elementary school and one private elementary school. Families move to the area in search of a quiet lifestyle as well as the property investment that is found in this agricultural area which is helping the economy thrive. The community is home in Long Island's North Fork wine region. The most popular attractions in Aquebogue include the Paumanouk Vineyards and the Ver Der Ber Garden Center home to a variety of perennials, annuals, bushes, and trees.
